purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom. thank you. god bless you. and may he forever bless these united states of america. this year inauguration fell on the martin luther king jr. holiday. after being sworn in, president obama paused for a moment of reflection in front of a bust of the civil rights leader at the capitol rotunda. he was joined by the first lady and congressional leaders. but the president wasn't the only one in the spotlight on monday. first daughters malia and sasha obama had quite a few scene-stealing moments of their own. the normally reserved malia let loose a little bit, busting out dance moves for her mom before the swearing-in. and 11-year-old sasha created an instant viral video, yawning during her dad's presidential address right after a line about education policy. the girls also used their phones to take lots of photos of their family during the event. and at one point malia even

photobombed her younger sister. yeah, sisters do that to each other. before leaving the inaugural platform as the center of attention for the very last time, president obama had the presence of mind to stop and take in the moment. >> one more time. i'm not going to see this again. >> great job. ♪ meanwhile, the "today" show's al roker had this unforgettable moment with vice president joe biden while covering the inaugural parade. >> the vice president! mr. vice president! mr. vice president! hey, how you doing? come on! come on! they won't let you?

that's it! yeah! all right! yes! yes! >> the persistent al roker. now here's your look at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." we start with inauguration moments making the rounds. beau biden, the vice president's son, had a very serious expression on his face as he closely watched beyonce's performance of the national anthem. her performance also seemed to catch the eye of senator chuck schumer. he was also behind the dazzling diva stealing a bit of the spotlight with that face. president clinton didn't want to miss the chance of seeing kelly clarkson up close and personal. he was caught sneaking a peek out of line. obama's brother-in-law, craig robinson, was hamming it up over the president's shoulder. eric cantor was caught making some sour faces during richard blanco's reading of the inaugural poem. doesn't look like he's a fan. and from a frequent critic of president obama, conservative

tact activist grover norquist feeted, "it is official. the best after-party tonight was chicago mayor rahm's." for a look at the national forecast, we turn to dylan dreyer. >> good morning. it ended up being nice. >> dry and pretty warm. >> and temperatures were above average yesterday, but today the 20s will start working into the nation's capital. also 20s to take told across the northeast and even single dimgis through the northern plains. that cold air crossing over the great lakes which are still unfrozen is creating a lot of lake-effect snow. that's where we'll see most of the additional snow moving throughout the rest of this week. perhaps another 6 to 12 inches of snow possible. we also have some snow still continuing to fall across cape cod. not a lot. this storm system brought the bulk of the precipitation right to the southeast of nantucket. but we are still looking at some ocean enhancement to produce perhaps another coating to an

inch of snow across cape cod. here's where we are going to see this cold air just continue to stream over the unfrozen great lakes. especially western michigan and also western new york and northwestern pennsylvania. that's where we're going to see most of the additional snow. perhaps an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow in that area. and we could also see 6 to 12 in northwestern michigan and also northeastern michigan as well. right on the thumb there. we are looking at this cold air to hold strong for several more days. nine below right now in minneapolis. work in wind on top of that, it feels like 22 below in minneapolis. feels like ten below in chicago right now. and high temperatures today don't look all that impressive. the cold air just sits across the northern plains moving into the western great lakes. and then this will continue to surge eastward as we head into tomorrow. temperatures today in boston, only 28 degrees. 25 in new york city. but ironically in southern california yesterday, we tied and even broke record high temperatures with highs yesterday in the lower 80s.

welcome back to "first look." elections are being held in israel right now to determine if prime minister benjamin netanyahu will win a third term in office. nbc's jim maceda is live in tel aviv. good morning. assuming priedictioning are correct and he wins, what effect could that have on israel's policies? >> reporter: hi to you, mara. well, about 15%, keep in mind, of israelis are saying that they're still undecided going into today's voting booth, so this is not a done deal. but all indications are that netanyahu's right-wing party with a second partner party will

win a third term but with fewer seats, maybe eight to ten fewer seats in parliament. the biggest question is who does he choose in a coalition to govern with? the smart money is on him lining up with even more hard-line parties to his right which, of course, is the nightmare scenario for palestinians. or he could surprise everyone and team up with a more centrist bloc, and that would probably give him more wiggle room, at least that's what the analysts are saying, to deal with the stalled peace talks and what israelis are calling a tanking economy. and the horse trading begins as early as tomorrow morning. mara? >> and let's turn, if we can, to elsewhere in the region to syria where russia is sending planes to lebanon to evacuate citizens from the region. now, what kind of sign does that send to assad's government in syria? >> reporter: well, that's a very good question. first of all, the russian government's making this look like an evacuation, a short-term evacuation, only for those who want to leave the region. but russian officials are
